Drawing from the rich influence of the European gypsy musicians, most notably Django Reinhardt
and Stephane Grappelli, the Madison-based Harmonious Wail combines Eastern European folk songs
with American jazz music to produce a new page in the folk-jazz idiom.
With guitar, violin, ukulele, mandolin, bass, percussion (including a scissors and a cardboard box
played with brushes) and smoldering vocals, the quartet is an infectious blend of continental jazz,
swing and gypsy music. All seasoned musicians, the group was founded in 1987, and over the years
has won awards for Best Jazz CD, Best Ensemble Vocalists of the Year, and many others.
